Character in Action

Putting character into practice

At North Oxfordshire Academy, character is developed through experience as well as through what students learn.

Throughout their time at NOA, students are given opportunities to challenge themselves, discover new interests, take responsibility, work with others and contribute to their school and wider community.

These experiences allow students to put our CARD values — Confidence, Ambition, Respect and Determination — and our wider character virtues into practice.

Beyond the classroom

Some of the most valuable opportunities to develop character happen beyond students’ everyday lessons.

Through clubs and activities, trips, visits and wider experiences, students have opportunities to discover new interests, develop their talents, work with others and challenge themselves in new situations.

These experiences help students build confidence and independence, develop determination and create a stronger sense of connection with the world beyond the classroom.

Leading and contributing

We want students to recognise that they can make a positive contribution to the community around them.

Student leadership provides opportunities to take responsibility, represent others, develop ideas and help shape school life.

Students also have opportunities to participate in social action and activities that encourage them to think about how they can make a difference to others.

Building belonging through our House System

Our House System brings students together across the school and creates opportunities to participate, collaborate and compete.

House activities and competitions encourage teamwork, participation and a strong sense of belonging, while giving students further opportunities to demonstrate their character.

Preparing for the future

Character also plays an important role in preparing students for life beyond NOA.

Through careers education, encounters with employers and experiences of further and higher education, students develop the confidence and ambition to consider their future and make informed decisions about their next steps.

Recognising character

We believe that character should be noticed and celebrated.

Our reward culture recognises students for a wide range of achievements and positive contributions, helping students understand that success is about more than academic outcomes alone.

Whether demonstrating determination when something is difficult, showing respect for others, having the confidence to take on a new challenge or demonstrating ambition for their future, students are encouraged to recognise how their choices contribute to their own development.

Character every day

Character at NOA is not confined to a single lesson, activity or programme.

It can be seen in the way students approach their learning, support one another, take part in school life, respond to challenges and contribute to their community.

By providing opportunities to learn about character, practise character and reflect on character, we aim to help every student develop the qualities they need to flourish at school and throughout their lives.
