Developing Character

Helping every student become the best version of themselves

At North Oxfordshire Academy, we believe character can be developed.

Our CARD values — Confidence, Ambition, Respect and Determination — provide the foundation, but developing character also means helping students build a wider range of qualities that will support them throughout school and in their future lives.

We deliberately create opportunities for students to practise these qualities, reflect on their choices and understand how their character influences the way they learn, work with others and contribute to their community.

Our Character Virtues

Our approach considers character through four areas: Civic, Intellectual, Moral and Performance virtues.

Together, they help students develop not only the determination to achieve their goals, but also the judgement, compassion and sense of responsibility needed to make positive choices.

Civic Virtues

The qualities that help us contribute positively to our community and wider society.

Civic virtues encourage students to understand their responsibilities towards others and recognise the contribution they can make to the communities around them.

Values include:

  • Service
  • Neighbourliness
  • Citizenship
  • Community awareness
  • Volunteering
  • Social justice

At NOA we are already looking to develop these through various initiatives like:

  • The Banbury Lunch Box Project
  • Bibby Financial Christmas celebration at Residential Home
  • School Leadership Team
  • Character & Culture PHSE programme
  • Character Assemblies
  • Character Counts Curriculum lessons
  • Remembrance Day
Intellectual Virtues

The qualities that help us think, learn and understand.

Intellectual virtues support students in becoming thoughtful and independent learners who are willing to question, reflect, consider different perspectives and develop their understanding.

Values include:

  • Reflection
  • Focus
  • Critical thinking
  • Reason and judgement
  • Curiosity
  • Resourcefulness

  • Computing for Girls
  • Computer Programming Club
  • LGBTQ+ Club
  • Character Assemblies
  • Character Counts Curriculum lessons
  • Visits to further academic institutes
  • Meaningful Career Conversations
  • Visiting speakers
  • Employer engagement activities
  • Futures Fair
Moral Virtues

The qualities that help us understand what is right and act accordingly.

Moral virtues help students develop positive relationships, consider the impact of their actions on others and make thoughtful, responsible choices.

Values include:

  • Courage
  • Compassion/Empathy
  • Gratitude
  • Justice
  • Honesty
  • Humility
  • Modesty
  • Self-discipline
  • Tolerance

  • Perseverance
  • Determination
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Confidence
  • Motivation

How We Develop Character

Character development at NOA is deliberate and woven throughout school life.

Our approach is organised through six strands, providing students with opportunities to learn about character, practise it and put it into action.

Careers & Employabilty

We prepare students for their future by developing the character, skills and confidence they need for further education, training and employment.

Careers education, encounters with employers and experiences of colleges and universities help students develop ambition and make informed choices about their next steps.

Character & Culture

Our school culture provides the environment in which strong character can flourish.

Through high expectations, positive relationships and a shared language around character, students learn how their values and choices influence themselves, other people and the wider community.

Character Counts Education

Students are given dedicated opportunities to explore character and consider how values and virtues apply to their everyday lives.

Through assemblies, tutor time and character education, students are encouraged to reflect, discuss different perspectives and consider how they might respond to challenging situations.

Enrichment

Character develops through experiences as well as lessons.

Our enrichment programme gives students opportunities to discover new interests, develop talents, work with others, overcome challenges and experience activities beyond the classroom.

Student Leadership

Students are given meaningful opportunities to take responsibility and contribute to school life.

Leadership experiences help students develop confidence, communication, responsibility and the ability to work effectively with others.

House System

Our House System creates opportunities for students to participate, compete, collaborate and contribute to their school community.

Through shared activities and competitions, students develop teamwork, belonging and pride in their achievements and those of others.

From understanding character to living it

Our values, virtues and six strands work together.

Students learn about character, have opportunities to practise it and are encouraged to reflect on the choices they make. Over time, these experiences help students develop the confidence and judgement to make thoughtful decisions independently.

Character development therefore happens both through what students are taught and what they experience.

Character in Action

The best way to understand character at NOA is to see what students do with it.

From leadership and social action to clubs, enrichment, careers experiences and House activities, students have opportunities throughout their time at NOA to put their character into practice.
