Character at NOA

Developing character. Raising ambition.

At North Oxfordshire Academy, character is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that a great education is about more than academic achievement. It is about helping young people develop the knowledge, confidence and strength of character they need to make the most of their opportunities and lead happy, successful and fulfilling lives.

Our ambition is simple: to provide every student with an exceptional education in both character and academics, giving them the very best life chances.

Character is part of everyday life at NOA

Character education is not something that happens only in a particular lesson or activity. It is woven throughout school life.

Students develop their character through their lessons, tutor programme, enrichment activities, leadership opportunities, careers education, the house system and experiences beyond the classroom.

Throughout these opportunities, we encourage students to put our four core values into practice:

Confidence. Ambition. Respect. Determination.

These values help shape the choices we make, the way we treat others and the expectations we have for ourselves.

A deliberate approach to character

We believe character can be developed.

That means giving students opportunities to encounter challenges, take responsibility, work with others, contribute to their community, discover new interests and reflect on the kind of person they want to become.

Our approach helps students develop a broad range of qualities and virtues that will support them throughout their education and into adult life.

Recognised for our approach

In July 2026, North Oxfordshire Academy was awarded the Character Education Quality Mark, recognising the strength and impact of our approach to character education.

The assessment highlighted the way character is embedded across both curriculum and pastoral life, the strength of relationships throughout our school community and the way our values of Confidence, Ambition, Respect and Determination are integrated into everyday school life.

The assessor also recognised the confidence with which our students can talk about character and apply virtues to real-life situations, alongside the wide range of opportunities available to develop character through clubs, leadership and wider school experiences.

We are proud of this recognition, while continuing to develop and strengthen our approach to character education for every student.
