Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

At North Oxfordshire Academy, students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is an important part of their wider education and personal development.

SMSC development takes place across academy life, including through the curriculum, PSHCE, tutor activities, assemblies and wider opportunities and experiences. These help students reflect on their own values and experiences, understand right and wrong, develop positive relationships and appreciate the diversity of the world around them.

Through our approach to SMSC, we aim to prepare students to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Spiritual Development

Students are supported to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences and to develop their understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.

Through learning and wider academy experiences, students have opportunities to develop curiosity, imagination and creativity, consider different beliefs and perspectives, and reflect thoughtfully on their experiences.

Moral Development

Students develop their understanding of right and wrong and learn to consider the consequences of their choices and actions.

They are encouraged to explore moral and ethical issues, consider different viewpoints, use reasoned arguments and understand the importance of acting with integrity and respect for others.

Social Development

Students develop the skills they need to participate positively in their academy and wider communities. They learn to work effectively with others, build respectful relationships and engage constructively with people from different backgrounds.

Students are also encouraged to understand how communities and society function and how they can contribute positively as responsible and active citizens.

Cultural Development

Students are encouraged to understand and appreciate their own cultural influences and the diversity of modern Britain and the wider world.

Through the curriculum and wider opportunities, students encounter a broad range of cultural, artistic, sporting, scientific and other experiences. They are encouraged to value diversity, show respect for different cultures and traditions and challenge prejudice and discrimination.
