Character

North Oxfordshire Academy Values, Vision and Mission

Our vision, our mission, and our values have been arrived at after consultation with staff and students at North Oxfordshire Academy. Every decision we take, from appointing staff, to creating policies and deciding student pathways, is made using these values. We expect all staff to exhibit them and use them in decision-making. We encourage all young people, and their families, to work within these values.

Character Education at NOA

Our core character values are:

Confidence

Definition: Believing in yourself and your abiliy to grow and succeed

  • The ability to interact with others positively and effectively
  • The ability to express oneself expressively and with fluency
  • The belief in your ability to succeed in a particular task or goal

Ambition

Definition: A strong desire to achieve something

  • Aiming to achieve the highest possible outcome
  • Aspiring to achieve the best possible jobs, college and university places
  • Offering leadership opportunities for all

Respect

Definition: A quality shown through thinking and acting in a positive way

  • Respect for others
  • Respect for ourselves
  • Respect for our environment

Determination

Definition: The ability to continue trying to do something, although it may be difficult

  • Not giving up during adversity
  • Embracing the challenges of learning at a higher level
  • Support each other to achieve

We use these terms as part of our daily language and encourage their use in classrooms by using the merits system. These Character values underpin everything we do at the school and are seen across all areas of the Academy.

Developing good character in our students is essential for holistic growth and success - it shapes our students into well rounded, ethical individuals who positively impact society.

At NOA, we encourage students to develop our core character values of Confidence, Ambition, Respect, and Determination.

Education with Character at North Oxfordshire Academy 

Development of character is through six strands: 

Careers and Employability 

Careers and Employability lessons are delivered at designated times, with follow-up activities available for students on the Unifrog platform.  

Throughout the academic year, we collaborate with colleges, universities, employers, and training providers to give students valuable insights into pathways beyond ages 16 and 18.

Character and Culture 

Character and Culture personal development aims to meet the requirements of SMSC, PSHE, and RSE. We use Chameleon PD and Peer Scroller to deliver lessons through a planned curriculum.   

Key themes are explored throughout the year in assemblies, with engagement from a range of external companies to support the delivery of various topics during extended tutor sessions.

Character Counts Education 

Our core values—confidence, ambition, respect, and determination—are explicitly reinforced throughout the Character Counts weekly sessions and further embedded in character assemblies. Students also explore additional character values throughout the year with a Character Value of the Month. Character development is evidenced through house competitions, community projects, and character celebrations.

Enrichment 

NOA’s character clubs offer students both sporting and academic opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding beyond the curriculum. Each enrichment activity is designed to support students in developing key character values. 

Clubs for Character include:

A variety of enriching trips throughout the year including residentials including KS3 Camp, Normandy, Iceland, Geneva and the Ski Trip. 

Student Leadership 

Students have the opportunity to take on leadership roles across various areas. Our leadership team consists of representatives from six distinct leadership groups, each contributing to the school community in meaningful ways.

Throughout the academic year, a variety of competitions encourage healthy rivalry and foster a strong sense of community. At the end of the year, the winners of the house competition are celebrated with a school trip.
