Child Employment
Part-time employment can help young people develop confidence, responsibility and valuable workplace skills. However, there are important rules to protect children's safety, wellbeing and education.
What parents, carers and employers need to know
In Oxfordshire, children aged 13 and over may undertake certain types of light work until they reach the statutory school leaving age. The work must comply with restrictions on working hours, permitted duties and working conditions.
Employers are responsible for ensuring that:
-
The work is suitable for the child's age and does not affect their education, health or wellbeing.
-
A child employment permit is obtained from the local authority where the child will work.
-
A risk assessment is completed and shared with the child's parents or carers.
-
The relevant school completes its part of the permit application.
Applying for a child employment permit
Employers must apply for a permit through the relevant local authority. In Oxfordshire, applications and supporting guidance are available from Oxfordshire County Council.
