Everyone is welcome to the school library, where the librarian, Dr Root, is always on hand to help with reading recommendations. The library is a quiet space for students who wish to study, research, read for pleasure, or pursue other learning activities. Many students choose to play some of our wide variety of card and board games during break or lunch. Independent study by all students is encouraged and the library is open before school most days and after school on a Monday and a Friday.
At break and lunchtime library use is restricted to Year 7 & 8 on Monday and Wednesday and Year 9 on Tuesday and Thursday. This only applies to these year groups. All other year groups can access the library at any time, provided there is not a class taking place inside. On Fridays the library is closed for student librarian training. Our student librarians are a dedicated and enthusiastic group, and we have a waiting list for new recruits. We follow the School Library Association Award Scheme and our student librarians work towards earning their five certificates of merit.
The library has an excellent fiction section, split by genre, with a wide range of difficulty ratings and plenty of dyslexia-friendly texts. In short there is something to suit every reading taste, and if the book you want isn’t there, just put a request in the box and when the book comes in you can be the first to borrow it! We have an expanding non-fiction section classified using the Dewey system, and plenty of computers available for students to use. Students can borrow a maximum of three books at a time for up to three weeks – please be sure to return them in the returns boxes to ensure that they are removed from your account.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays the library is closed after school for after-school club. On Tuesdays we have a Book Talk club, where we discuss what we are currently reading and reading for pleasure more generally. We usually finish the club off with a game of book bingo, with chocolate prizes. On Thursdays we have a Games Club where we meet to play some of the games in the library – we have a good range available from Uno to Exploding Kittens to Bananagrams. Students are also welcome to bring in their own games to share. Both clubs are open to students from all years and are well-attended. There is also a Chess club in the library on a Monday 3-4pm, but the library remains open during this time.
